The Harrisburg area has an unusually mixed housing stock, and it shows up in deck work.

Established neighborhoods — Paxtang, Penbrook, Colonial Park, and the older parts of Susquehanna Township, tend to have solid mid-century homes on modest, sometimes sloped lots. The design challenge is usually fitting a genuinely usable deck into a tight footprint, working around an existing rear entry, and getting the stair run right on a grade. Older homes also need a careful look at the ledger connection and flashing before anything gets attached; that’s the single most common failure point we find on existing decks.

Newer construction in Lower Paxton, Linglestown, Mechanicsburg, Dillsburg and out toward Hershey and Hummelstown generally gives us more room to work with. If you’d rather have something roofed or fully enclosed, a covered porch or sunroom may suit you better, and we build both.

City properties bring their own considerations, including tighter setbacks, rear-yard access limits, and parcels near the Susquehanna where floodplain elevation requirements come into play. Those aren’t dealbreakers, but they need to be identified up front rather than discovered mid-project.

Permits, Footings, and Central PA Weather

Most deck projects in the Harrisburg area require a permit, and the process depends on where your house sits. Properties inside the city are handled by Harrisburg’s codes office, while Lower Paxton, Susquehanna, Swatara, West Hanover, and the other Dauphin County townships each run their own permitting through their municipal offices. Requirements, fees, and review times vary between them.

Two things matter more here than homeowners usually expect:

Footings. Central Pennsylvania’s frost line means footings need to extend well below grade, typically around 36 inches, depending on your municipality. Undersized or shallow footings are why so many older decks in the area have visibly shifted, pulled away from the house, or developed a slope you can feel underfoot. We don’t cut that corner.

Materials that survive the season swing. Harrisburg gets humid summers, freeze-thaw winters, and enough rain to punish anything that wasn’t installed properly.
